Chapter Seventeen
Rue walked into work with one mission in mind. Speak to Witkowski. He was the officer listed on the report. Along with a Dotson. Whoever that was. After Rue left Atticusâs house, she went home and reviewed the information she hadâagain. This time around, she noticed how Witkowski, and Dotson had been on several of the cases she had. With the exception of a few other officers who took the report.
The attacks had started in 1990. Witkowski had gotten on the case six months after the attacks started, and had been on them until the trail ran cold. Rue had heard about his stellar record. Allegedly stellar that is. It seemed this case in particular was his white whale. The one case he hadnât been able to solveâfind a lead onâor even make sense of. And the one person who was able to identify a possible suspect gets run out of town.
Rue was also inclined to believe that Witkowski, along with his fellow detectives, were responsible for harassing him. All because he stated what he saw, and they didnât like it. In addition to their unprofessional behavior, Rue had questions surrounding the missing information. Why was his witness statement missing? Where had it been placed because it certainly wasnât in the file. Rue had gone over every single detail. Combed through the files she had, even her memory, and nothing.
There wasnât even anything that she could find that showed they looked into Atticusâs claim. More than likely, they immediately dismissed it and elected to make him suffer for it.
In her conversation with Jamison, she insinuated that she and Terri might have mixed up some paperwork during the time they were sorting the files. That was just to keep him from going off the deep end. He would go into a complete frenzy if he thought she was going after a dirty cop.
Rue swallowed her fear and pressed the button for the elevator. Walking into it, she selected the third floor. She was hoping this went well. All the information she needed was what happened with Atticusâs statement. She also had a few questions surrounding the previous cases.
Stepping off the elevator, Rue looked around, searching the room for Witkowski. After she located him, she made her way towards his desk. He was sipping a cup of coffee, appearing to be busy. Rue stopped at the side of his desk.
Witkowski looked up at her.
âIs there something I can help you with?â he asked snidely.
A smirk formed on Rueâs lips. He was rude. That much she knew. Still, she needed information from him, so sheâd play nice for now.
âThere is actually.â
Witkowski shifted in his chair.
âAnd what is it that I can help you with?â
âI had a few questions for you,â Rue replied.
âFor me?â he asked in a sarcastic tone. âWhat kinds of questions could a patrol officer have for me?â
Rue held her tongue as she breathed through her nose. His tone was unbecoming. It was borderline ignorant. Certainly, along the lines of arrogant.
